A bit about Alan

Hello! I developed a strong passion for my subjects at school. I want to help others to discover that same excitement for maths and the sciences, and to make them realise that their goals are attainable. As a recent graduate of the university of Edinburgh, where I obtained a Masters degree in theoretical physics, I have been able to garner the skills necessary for engaging with my subjects. I began tutoring while I was still a student in my sixth year, and I found that this understanding of still also being in education enabled me to have a deeper and more complete ability to empathise with my own students.

How does Alan run their lessons?

In my experience, every student requires a slightly different approach to get the most out of their lessons. Despite this, my primary focus is always on using past exam questions as a way to practise, and to determine areas that require strengthening. I also believe that it is effective for the student to have a grasp of the standard of questions that they are aiming to answer, and that the earlier this standard is understood the better. I try to encourage my students to bring questions to the lessons if they have struggled with anything they learned in class that week, and I make sure they understand that it is always fine to highlight anything that doesn’t make sense to them as I am teaching. The message I try to get across is that it is better to undo all of their confusion together in our sessions than to do it alone in the exam.
